Treat Arthritis With Aromatherapy

Inflammation, pain and swelling of the joints are some of the symptoms of a disease called arthritis. It affects normal joint movement, which restricts motion. The sufferer may also feel feverish or fatigued. Arthritis is one of the leading causes of disability in the United States. It limits physical activity and in extreme cases it can cause deformity.

There is no known cure for arthritis but a treatment called aromatherapy may help patients feel better. Aroma means scent and therapy means treatment. It is an alternative approach to mental and physical health problems. Aromatherapy uses pure essential oils to help heal imbalances in your body. Essential oils are fine liquids that are extracted from plants, trees, flowers and bushes. Each pure oil is made up of numerous separate compounds. These compounds need to be in the final oil for it to be of the maximum aroma-therapeutic value. Hydorsols and phytols are blended in with the essential oils for treating arthritis. Hydorsol is the condensed water that is left over after an essential oil is produced from water distillation. The flavor and aroma are saturated in the water from the distilled material. Phytols are a remedy prepared by soaking plant material in vegetable oil or water.

When you visit an aromatherapist for the first time, they will take an assessment of your lifestyle. Some questions might include your diet, stress level and medical history. They will than select the oils and make a personalized blend that is right for you. A massage will follow resulting in relaxation. Treatments will alter depending on your symptoms at the time.

There are several things you can do, if you would rather treat yourself at home. One way that has been successful in easing the pain of arthritis is the application of hot compresses. Put hot water into a bowl. Make sure it is not too hot. Add three to six drops of an essential oil to the water. Make sure you use an oil with pain relieving properties such as chamomile, lavender or cinnamon. Put a sterile cotton cloth into the water. Wring out some excess water and place the cloth onto the bothersome area. Let the cloth cool down to your body temperature. Repeat these steps several times. Use a warm towel or other material to wrap the region that you treated.

You can also rub the essential oils onto painful areas during the day. The oils are absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream. Always make sure the oils are diluted when applied to the skin. They need to be mixed with a carrier lotion or vegetable oil. Aromatic baths are another way to ease your pain. Add the essential oils to hot water for a relaxing combination. Pour the oils under running water and always make sure it is mixed well. Use 5-7 drops of essential oils to 1 ounce carrier oil. Lemon, Eucalyptus and Camphor are some other oils appropriate for treating arthritis symptoms. Aromatherapy has no negative side effects and can help you to feel more comfortable.

Also royal harems and guest houses used many aromatic oils very profusely to satisfy many important guests. Aromatherapy has its roots in the most ancient healing and therapeutic practices. Medicinal plants are used to cure many ailments and used in many sacred rituals to evoke different states of consciousness.

Elaborate religious ceremonies were performed in Egyptian temples, where the dead King was mummified and surrounded with exotic essential oils. Egyptians believed very firmly that essential oils have an unusual preserving property when added with other spices.

Embalming was one of the principal uses of aromatherapy, preserving the tissue of the bodies for thousands of years. The oils and resins used were so potent, that in the 17th century mummies were sold in Europe and doctors distilled them for use in their medicines.
Aromatherapy truly emerged from the smoky temples of Egypt 6,000 years ago. Egypt was the birthplace of medicine, pharmaceutics, cosmetics and perfumery. Trading was flourishing and traders arrived for trade from all over the world by land and sea to deliver flowers, herbs and plants.
Priestesses and priests strictly supervised the delicate preparations in the temples and palaces, reading formulas & chanting incantations and hymns, as substances were measured & combined with ultimate precision. Purification processes went on for months until the right, perfect subtle blend was achieved.
The use of aromatherapy spread from Egypt to Israel, China, India and the Mediterranean. Every culture, from the most backward to the most modern, developed own set of practices. Greek physicians and military surgeons were employed by the Romans every where in the empire. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the science spread to the Arab countries, where medicine men devoted them to the ancient art of alchemy, perfecting the art of distillation and extraction.

For many centuries essential oils were the only remedies for epidemic diseases and conditions. During the dreaded Black Plague, very few became ill, who in fact were associated with perfumeries and glove industries where these oils were in profuse use.

During the 19th century, with the development of modern science, all forms of herbal medicine disappeared until the 1920s, when French chemist Gatefosse revived the art, giving it the name Aromatherapy. India was one of the few countries where the tradition was never lost, Avurveda being the most ancient medical practice in the world today. Aromatherapy is now used in hospitals, offices, clinics and homes all over the world.

Aromatherapy acts as a bridge between the new and old; most of the industries use these oils for various blends and concoctions, which provide cure and relief for a number of complications.

Aromatherapy and Homeopathy Treatments for Acne

n the first part of this article, we have discussed the importance of herbal medicines and vitamin therapy in the fight against acne. I promised to give you more. Keeping true to my words, I now bring you the second part of the series.

Aromatherapy and homeopathy are two of the oldest methods of treating acne. Read on to know how they help counter acne.

Aromatherapy. Aromatherapy has long been considered as a natural remedy for acne problems. Of the different essential oils used for this purpose, tea tree oil is regarded as the most effective. It is known to contain both antifungal and antiseptic properties, which help defend the skin against acne outbreaks. It is also known to possess antiviral and antibacterial properties, which further protects the skin from disease causing micro organisms.

Researches prove that tea tree oil is as effective as benzoyl peroxide in treating acne minus its negative side effects. In a clinical study published by the Medical Journal of Australia in 1990, it was established that using 5% tea tree oil or a 5% benzoyl peroxide in treating acne produces more or less the same results. The only drawback in using the former is that it took a little longer to produce noticeable results.

Other aromatherapy oils that can be used to counter the problem are jasmine (Jasminum officinale), lavender (Lavendula agustifolia), myrrh (Commiphora myrrha), sandalwood (Santalum album) and Ylang ylang (Cananga odorata). These essential oils all contain the chemical substance farnesol which is responsible in inhibiting the growth of certain acne-causing bacteria.

To use aromatherapy in dealing with facial acne, you may apply a drop of tea tree oil using a cotton bud directly to the skin or you can use it in your steam facial. Just add a few drops of the oil in a basin full of hot water and presto!

If you prefer to use a combination of essential oils, you may want to try this mixture: Combine 5 drops geranium, 7 drops lavender, 7 drops atlas cedarwood and 12 drops tea tree essential oil with ¼ ounce jojoba oil in a small glass vial. Jojoba oil will serve as the base oil for the mixture. It will also increase the total absorptive capacity of the oils in the skin. The mixture can be applied directly to the blemish with a cotton swab or by using your finger. Just make sure that you wash your hands first to avoid infections.

However, it is sensible always to observe caution in using any type of medication. Although aromatherapy is considered safe for most people, some may still have reactions to some of the components of essential oils.

Homeopathy Treatment. Homeopathic doctors consider acne as an indication of a deeper internal problem and hence, should not be treated using topical medications. Instead, the patient's general health condition is taken into consideration to come up with the correct formula to address the problem. Homeopathy upholds the principle of complete and gentle healing. It works by attempting to stimulate the body's own natural healing capacity so that healing comes from within.

When you undergo a homeopathy treatment, you will notice a temporary acne outbreak. Don't worry since this only indicates that the treatment is working favorably. This phase will be followed by noticeable signs of improvement - your skin texture will improve and the redness, itchiness and roughness of your skin will be considerably less. Your complexion will steadily improve from thereon. In homeopathy, each case is unique. For best results, it is imperative that you consult with a qualified practitioner.

There are still other ways to forever ward off acne and enjoy a blemish-free skin. You will be thrilled to read the final part of this series! Watch out for it!

Aromatherapy candles have found their way into many homes, businesses, and alternative health practices. Aromatherapy candles are an excellent way to open up your senses and relieve stress.

What is needed to make aromatherapy candles.

Before we begin to make these wonderful candles let us look at what equipment and supplies will be needed. First you will need essential oils. Essential oils are obtained from plants using a specific method of distillation. Essential oils can be very expensive. The good thing about essential oils is that it only takes a small amount to produce the aroma that you want for your candle. Some people like to mix these essential oils to make a scent of their own. For now we will stick with just one basic essential oil. Bergamot is an essential oil used for tension and stress. It is also an essential oil that is used to help as an antidepressant because it is an uplifting effect. There are many places that you can get the essential oil that you want. The type of candle, whether it is a soy or paraffin, will determine the equipment needed. In this article we will show how to make a soy aromatherapy candle using the essential oil for the fragrance. You will need a measuring bowl made of glass to melt your wax, potholders to hold the wax when removing it from the microwave, a spoon, soap, water, a container, essential oil, and dye if desired. You will also need a wick, hot glue gun, and a pencil.

The art of creating an aromatherapy candle.

You are now ready to begin your journey on making your first aromatherapy candle. Let us take a take a look at wicks. The wick that you use for your aromatherapy candle can directly effect how your candle burns. Not all wicks are created equal. Always purchase the size wick that you need according to the diameter of your candle that you will be crafting. Gather all your supplies and equipment. Place the appropriate amount of soy chip wax into the measuring cup. To know the amount of wax that you will need you will need to know the capacity of the container that you are putting your aromatherapy candle in. You can start with a small amount of soy wax chips and add more until you reach the desired amount of melted wax. While the wax is melting prepare your container by using hot glue to attach the metal portion of the wick to the inside of the container. Use the pencil with a small amount of the wick wrapped around it to hold the wick in the middle. Secure the pencil to prevent movement while pouring the wax. Remove the melted wax carefully from the microwave to prevent burns. Try adding a few drops of essential oil to your melted wax. It is better to have little than to have too much. That way, when your candle burns, the fragrance does not overwhelm the person that it is for. This is the experimental part of aromatherapy and most sources do not agree on the amount to use. Once the oil is in the melted soy wax, mix well and pour into your container. Be sure the wick is centered after pouring.

For aromatherapy candles using a less decorative glass or tin as the holder will help the person using the candle to concentrate on the aroma and not just on how the container looks. You now have a beautiful candle that is a wonderful gift to share. If your candle aroma is not right the first time you may have to experiment with the use of the essential oils to get it right. Don't give up; you will create the perfect aromatherapy candle. Remember, mixing the oils is one way to create your own special aroma.
